FAQs

Here we will address some questions that are often asked about us, and GSDs in general. If you have any, feel free to send them to us to add.

I've heard that German Shepherds are very high energy, is this true?

That is a pretty loaded question, that doesn't have one definitive answer. It can really depend on a dog's lines, parents, and individual drive. Honestly, yes, GSDs have the potential to be high energy dogs that need more than a couple of walks per day. On the other hand, it isn't uncommon to end up with a GSD that is happy to take a walk, play a bit, then relax with you as well. Basically, know what you are looking for, know what energy/drive level is going to fit your lifestyle, and make that known to whoever you are working with in regard to potentially bringing in a puppy or dog.

Do German Shepherds shed alot?

Easiest answer here is basically 'Yes'. GSDs have a double coat. The outer guard hairs shed year-round. They aren't overwhelming or even always noticeable. No more shedding in that regard than say a labrador. But, the thick undercoat will 'blow' twice per year. Usually in late spring and fall. This is noticeable and will have you vacuuming more than normal. However, it isn't difficult to manage if you keep the dog on a good diet, and brush frequently. The more you brush out, the less will end up falling out all over the house.

Are German Shepherds good with Children?

My answer is definitely, Yes. Of course, what any puppy develops into temperament-wise is going to depend on breeding, rearing and socialization. Genetic temperament potential is up to the breeder, as is early development and socialization. If those  are done properly, it makes a new owner's job easier. But, do not forget that it is still the new owner's job to make sure the foundation laid by the breeder is built upon. Socialization is VERY important. Of course if your puppy is raised with children from day 1 and both are actively taught proper interaction, children are an easy mix with these dogs. However, if you do not have children in the home, you will need to get out there and get your puppy around as many children of all ages for positive experiences as often as you can.

Do you have white or black and silver German Shepherds?

No, we do not. We do not breed for colors that are not desired/acceptable via the standard. We breed black and tan and bicolor German Shepherds right now, and perhaps Sables down the road.
Also on this topic, coloration should not be a primary concern when looking for a GSD puppy. Temperament, health, and general compatibility should always be the big 3 concerns when considering a new addition to your family.
